Twin Towns is a hands-on exhibition that explores the relationship of two sister cities: Cincinnati, Ohio and Gifu, Japan. Composed of two large side by side murals of each city and interactive features that encourage curiosity and play— the exhibit thoughtfully bridges the divide between two different cultures.
Inspired by the inherent friendliness and approachability of children’s museum exhibits, I created colorful and inviting infographic murals that featured iconic landmarks of both cities and fun facts hidden in the details of the artwork.
Viewers were encouraged to get up close to the art, interact, and even take some time to pretend. Each mural featured a shelf where visitors could taste Japan’s famous snack food, Pocky and Ohio’s classic buckeyes.
The exhibit provided a wide range of opportunities to learn a little bit more about each culture. As the visitors worked their way through the exhibit, at the back wall they were prompted by two pegboards.
The left board posed: which would you rather better – yourself, or society? Once the visitor chooses, their answer was then aligned with either individualism or collectivism relative to what each culture thinks.
On the right board, visitors could take a card that would teach them one Japanese word (or one English word).
